Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (1965)
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard ( Masculin féminin: 15 faits précis 1966 )

Godard tries his hand at Dick Tracy-like science fiction in this film about secret agent Lemmy Caution’s exploits in the city of ALPHAVILLE where love and self expression are outlawed. The science fiction side of things leans towards the real and less fantasy,  but is fun to explore with the lead. The narration is provided by a disembodied computer-like voice that growls in a gravelly tone and provides some background into what is happening. Will Lemmy find out what’s really going on in Alphaville and the evil scientist Von Braun?

Those not familiar with Godard’s work might be slightly taken aback by the slow pace of the film, but the way the characters interact and the way Godard shows the locations and action really made this a fun film for me to watch even with the slower pace of the plot. The French black and white style and the fashion of the time were interesting to me as well. Godard’s style is definitely something to take in. He’s an amazing film maker.

The film also stars the amazing Anna Karina – one of the classic beauties of cinema. ALPHAVILLE is well worth a viewing for that reason alone.

In todays high tech blockbuster world, it’s fun to see what a good director did with some low tech solutions back in the day. Not only do i think this film holds up today, but it’s interesting and entertaining where some of today’s films are….well…not. (See: MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS)
