Japanese animation or “anime” (please don’t call it “Japanimation” – dear lord….) is hit or miss.  There are some fantastic sci-fi shows like GHOST IN THE SHELL, some great children’s fair like TOTORO and KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE, and some truly touching stories like GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES that will have your heartstrings tugged so hard it hurts. FLCL or Fooly Cooly is just a crazy science fiction romp that will have you wondering what the heck is next.
Naota is a twelve year old boy who misses his older brother who;s gone off to play baseball. He hangs out with his friends and his brother’s ex-girlfriend and is bored day in and day out as he stumbles through his life. Enter Haruko Haruhara and her Vespa…and her guitar. She’s searching for someone and decides that Naota is the key to finding him. That is, Naota and the robot monsters that come out of his head when she hits him hard enough in the head with her guitar! Highly kinetic, silly, and stylish, this anime mini-series is well worth the investment of time. It’s a super fun and super strange hyperactive story about life in a sleepy town being shaken to the core by giant robots and alien mayhem!
