Punch Drunk Love

PunchDrunkLovePunch Drunk Love    2002
Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia 1999 / There will Be Blood 2007)

Adam Sandler jumps out of the slapstick goof role for something a little more downbeat in this romantic comedy. He works in a crap job out of something like a warehouse. He’s existing, but looking for something else in his life. Something meaningful. He has overbearing sisters who try to get him to date. Emily Watson plays the would be love interest who doesn’t give up. When Sandler realizes that she’s something special, he goes to extremes to make sure he doesn’t loose her. But, will his past catch up to ruin his happy plans? Dean Trumbell (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is not a nice man and may ruin everything.
I absolutely love this film. It has heart and tugs at your emotions with grace and style. You laugh, you get angry and you fall in love right along with Sandler who puts in one of the best performances I’ve seen from him. There’s a quirky quality to the film as well that gives it a dream-like feel. Anderson’s work is amazing as well. Kinetic camerawork and pacing make this one of my favorite films.

Barry: I didn’t ask for a shrink – that must’ve been somebody else. Also, that pudding isn’t mine. Also, I’m wearing this suit today because I had a very important meeting this morning and I don’t have a crying problem.

A fantastic, strange, and wonderful romantic comedy!
